Biography

Brenda Gilmore is a former Metro Council Woman and is presently a State Representative, in the Tennessee General Assembly Prior employment included almost twenty years as Director of University Mail Services for Vanderbilt. Employment has also included Counselor of Fidelity Federal Savings & Loan Association and Director, Postal Services Division, State of Tennessee.

Elected to the Metropolitan Council, District #1 (1999-2003) and Re-elected (2003-2007); Former Chairperson, Parks and Recreation and Library Committee; Former Vice Chair of the Planning and Zoning Committee;

Former Chair, Budget and Finance Committee; Chair, Convention and Tourist Convention and presently Chair of the Health, Hospital and Social Services Committee. Mrs. Gilmore was elected State Representative, District #54, August 3, 2006.

In the General Assembly, she is Chair of the Environment Committee and Secretary of the Conservation and Environment Committee, member of the Commerce and Insurance Committee and Utilities.

Mrs. Gilmore is a former member of the Toastmasters Club; Board of Directors, Tennessee Savings & Loan Leadership Conference; Panelist and Workshop Leader, National Postal Forum; Industry Chair and Executive board member of the Middle Tennessee Postal Customer Council. She was awarded the Outstanding Postal Customer Co-Chair in Las Vegas, NV in 1993.

Brenda has also formerly served on the Board of the John F. Kennedy Susan Gray School for Children who have been abused and with special needs; Chairperson, Board of Margaret Cunningham Women’s Center; Advisor, Undergraduate Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta; Chair, Faculty-Staff Giving Campaign for Vanderbilt University; and in 1996 she received a Certificate of Recognition for her commitment to diversity; and a Diversity Initiative Award in 2002.

Other community involvements have included Chairperson for the United Negro College Fund Volunteer Committee. Brenda also volunteers in Metro Schools.

She has held a seat on the Senior Citizens Inc. Board and has served as the Chair of the Program Resources Council and Chair of the Leadership Committee and President of the Senior Citizen Inc Board. She has also served on the Board of Directors of Skyline Medical Center and a member of NESS Supplier Diversity program.

Other board memberships have included, Junior League Advisory Board, Earth Matters, Bordeaux Hospital Advisory Board, Character Counts and the Northwest YMCA, the Downtown YMCA and the Nashvillian of the Year.

Mrs. Gilmore works in the Tennessee State University Alumni Association, WIN, Nashville Women Political Caucus, League of Women Voters and CABLE. Brenda is also the former President of CABLE, a women’s business organization of nearly 5400 women.

She is a Lifetime Member of the NAACP, and holds membership in the Music City Chapter of Links, Top Ladies of Distinction and the National Hook Up of Black Women. Brenda was also a member of 2000 Leadership Nashville.

Mrs. Gilmore received the “Spirit of Leadership” Award from CABLE, Public Services awards from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the Masons and Tennessee State University Alumni Association for her work in the community. She has served as Chair Elect, Senior Expo 2003 and Chair, Senior Expo 2004 , Nominee, 2003 and 2004 Athena Awards, Steering Committee, Racial Profiling Prevention Strategies, Metro Police, Advocacy Award by Metro Human Relations Commission, the Harriet Foley Award presented by Senior Citizens Inc., Citizens Award by the Pentecostal Tabernacle, Honorary Co-Chair, a Women’s Thanksgiving for Renewal House, Candlelight Award by the Jefferson Street United Merchants Partnership. Brenda Gilmore was Inducted into the YWCA Academy of Women Achievers, Recipient of the Fannie Lou Hamer Award presented by the National Hook-Up of Black Women, “E” Award for Community Services presented by the Tennessee Economic Council on Women, and a Nominee of The Nefertiti Award.
