David Shepard District 69 - Dickson County and part of Hickman County
Biography
Rep. Shepard is the son of M.O. and Pat Shepard. Rep. Shepard’s father served in World War II on a Navy submarine and met his future wife at a USO dance in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Rep. Shepard was born in Hickman County while his father was finishing his education at the University of Tennessee. (Guess that is why Rep. Shepard is and will ever be a UT fan.)
He received his Bachelor’s at the University of Tennessee, Martin, Pharmacy Bachelor’s and PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy) at the University of Tennessee, Health Science Center in Memphis.
Rep. Shepard is a decorated Vietnam veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He is a retired federal employee. He worked for 24 years at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Nashville. He was a pharmacy clinical specialist in psychiatry.
Rep. Shepard and his wife Martha have three children, Christopher, Stacey and Benjamin. He and Martha own a small chain of independent pharmacies. They are members of First United Methodist Church of Dickson and active in local civic organizations.
He served on the Dickson City Council from 1977 to 1989 and as vice mayor from 1979 to 1989. He is a charter member and past president of the High Noon Rotary Club of Dickson, a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion, and has served on the University of Tennessee Board of Governors and the Tennessee Municipal League Board of Directors. He was the 1998 recipient of the Bowl of Hygeia Award, for outstanding service by the Tennessee Pharmacists Association.
Rep. Shepard made the decision to run for the General Assembly because he was concerned about health care in Tennessee and wanted to make a difference.
He serves as Vice Chairman of the House Commerce Committee and Vice Chairman of the Senate/House TennCare Oversight Committee. Rep. Shepard also serves on the Senate/House Fiscal Review Committee and the Senate/House Veterans Oversight Committee. He is a member of the House Health and Human Resources Committee, the Professional Occupations and Health Care Facilities Subcommittees, and the Industrial Impact Subcommittee.
Rep. Shepard is a well-respected member of the House of Representatives, being honored by several organizations including: Tom Sharp Pharmacist of the Year (2001); Legislator of the Year - TN Development Association (2004), MAMI (2004), and the ARC of Tennessee (2005); Distinguished Service to Pharmacy Award - UT College of Pharmacy (2006); Hubert H. Humphrey Award - American Pharmacists Association (2008); University of Tennessee College Pharmacy Alumni Association's Outstanding Alumnus (2008).
