Biography
State Representative Johnnie R. Turner was appointed to complete the term representing House District 85 in January 2010 after her husband, State Representative Larry Turner’s untimely death. He represented the 85th District with distinction for 25 years. Johnnie Turner graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from LeMoyneOwenCollege. She continued her post graduate studies at the University of Memphis and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She is a member and on the Trustee Board of Greater Middle Baptist Church. She has one son and four grandchildren.
Representative Turner is a retired educator of Memphis City Schools and is the Executive Director on leave of the Memphis Branch NAACP. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the NAACP Tennessee State Conference, The New Memphis Arena Building Authority where she is Secretary, Leadership Memphis and LeMoyne Owen National Alumni Association where she is the Assistant Secretary and Founding Member, and Past President of the Memphis Alliance of Black School Educators. She is also a member of the Democratic Women of Shelby County, Memphis Retired Teachers Association, United Teaching Profession, Memphis/Shelby County Anti-Predatory Lending Coalition, Westwood Neighborhood Association, Advisory Board of the Memphis Juvenile Court System. Johnnie Turner is also the Past Vice Chairman of Health, Educational, and Housing Facility Board of Shelby County and the Past President of the Memphis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Representative Johnnie R. Turner is serving in the 106th General Assembly. She serves on the Education Committee, K-12 Subcommittee, Consumer and Employee Affairs Committee, and Consumer Subcommittee. She is also the Treasurer of the Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators.
